Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse

About This Project

Engaged by the La Jolla Playhouse and UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance, the Center is the permanent artistic and administrative home for the La Jolla Playhouse. The facility acts as an experimental laboratory for artists and educators, and is a state-of-the-art, fully-flexible teaching and performance facility, as well as an interaction venue for ideas and community interface. The site planning aim was to give the UCSD Theatre District a coherent identity as a bridge to the University and community, and to restore the existing park and eucalyptus grove to create an exterior court that unifies the 3 theatres in the District. Forms juxtaposed in harmony create an iconic building for the community, and a programmatically successful venue for its users.

The 50,000 s.f. facility, consists of a 450-seat black box theatre, 3 classroom/rehearsal spaces, outdoor public spaces, restaurant, and technical and storage support spaces.
