Silver Star Apartments is a carbon-neutral, net zero energy building in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The recently-completed development includes 49-units of affordable housing for homeless veterans. In addition to achieving LEED Platinum, the project is Energy Star Multi-Family Homes Certified and is targeting Energy Petal Certification for the Living Building Challenge. The roof and wall mounted photovoltaic system is designed to offset 100% of all site energy use. Quality air sealing and insulation installation was implemented to greatly reduce envelope leakage and HVAC loads. The gray water system, recycles water from indoor uses (bathtubs, bathroom sinks, and washing machines), offsetting 100% of the irrigation demand and, when fully implemented, will flush toilets within the apartments. The system is expected to reduce potable water demand for the project by 40%, saving an estimated 700,000 Gallons of water per year.
